Gonzales proposes new crime: 'Attempted' copyright infringement

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is pressing the U.S. Congress to enact a sweeping intellectual-property bill that would increase criminal penalties for copyright infringement, including "attempts" to commit piracy.

"To meet the global challenges of IP crime, our criminal laws must be kept updated," Gonzales said during a speech before the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington on Monday.

Darkon is an oddly touching documentary about a gaggle of Dungeons & Dragons inspired weekend warriors in home-made medieval garb who make battle in nearby forests and glades. Skip Lipman, a stay-at-home dad, moonlights as proud warrior Bannor of Laconia, who schemes to defeat the land-grabbing forces of Keldar of Mordom (real world office drone Kenyon Wells). Distilled from 300 hours of footage, the film explores the uneasy interface between the gamers and their workaday world. It shows them as much more than misfits in funny outfits — many have a profound awareness that all of life is a performance and that we're all role playing in one way or another. Violinist Jonah Rapino from the Devil Music Ensemble, recent visitors to Columbia, has created an evocative score on par with any Hollywood fantasy.
